The city was founded by the Phoenicians, after which it was occupied by the Romans, then occupied by the Vandals who destroyed it, then occupied by the Byzantines and established it again, and it remained under their control until the Islamic conquest came, and the Arabs called it Sabra, and a group of Zawagha Berber tribes lived next to the city, so it became called The region is called Zawagha, and this region was mentioned in history books such as the book of Ibn Ghalboun, whose name is Al-Thikkar, who is the king of Tripoli, and what was in it of the good people, and the book of Ahmed Bey, the Ansari deputy, whose name is Al-Manhal Al-Athb in the history of Tripolitania Al-Gharb, as mentioned in the manuscript of the journey of the Moroccan traveler Al-Ayashi.
