Jebel Nafusa Mountains
9.5 hours
All months
Take a trip to the magnificent Jebel Nafusa Mountains, and head south of Tripoli towards the Jafara Plain to see Qasr al-Hajj, one of the best examples of a fortified Berber granary dating back to the 12th century, built to store the harvest of the surrounding area. Enter the site through an angled corridor that leads to an impressive courtyard. This gives you the feeling that you are entering a small valley, as the walls are completely surrounded by cave-like rooms.
Nafusa Mountains Tour Nafusa Mountains
Board the bus again for an amazing journey to the Nafusa Mountains. The slopes of the Nafusa Mountains have been severely eroded by wadis (dry valleys), and this Berber region is one of the few areas in Libya where Berber culture still thrives. Continue on to Yafrin, which sits high up on a series of rocky cliffs, overlooking the flat coastal plain. Drive through the valleys and see ancient towns and houses, stopping for a traditional Libyan lunch at a hotel overlooking the surrounding plains.

After lunch, head to Gharyan to see its main landmark – the only surviving example of an underground house. On your way down the mountain, stop for roadside shopping where you’ll find several pottery and ceramic vendors offering a wide range of locally-made art and crafts.
